Abstract

Downtown revitalization induces changes of its physical environment and the people who frequent and inhabit it. In Saint-Roch neighbourhood in Quebec City, one of the main projects related to the revitalization was the demolition of the roof of the downtown mall. At the beginning of the revitalization process, most of the homeless were against this demolition. Today however, positions are more divided. The aim of this article is to understand the reasons of this evolution. For this reason, we studied how the revitalization of Saint-Roch altered homeless territoriality. We notice that the stances of the homeless on the revitalization are ambivalent. On the one hand, they do not recognize themselves in the new people who frequent Saint-Roch, the luxury shops and restaurants. On the other hand, they consider that the neighbourhood beauty acts as a mirror which reflects a more positive image of themselves than before the revitalization.
