In a global context where the city is marketed through megaprojects that are often oriented toward culture and tourism, this article proposes an exploration of the Quartier des spectacles in Montreal. Using Henri Lefebvre, it puts forward the concept of lived heritage (patrimoine vécu) and aims at highlighting how social groups present in Montreal’s Redlight district perceive this symbolic place, and how each of them instrumentalize different aspects of urban memory and heritage in order to shape specific Lefebvrian lived spaces. It turns out that the centrality of place itself, the spatial practices it implies and the fight for “the right to the city” appear to be at the very core of the debates where urban memories collide.
ER -
